I woke up and had a coffee and muffin at the local café, Bar Casino, where everyone, locals and tourists alike, stopped to grab a bite, a coffee, a beer and then headed southeast along the waterfront following the route to get to the trail to the lighthouse, Far de Cala Nans. It was a moderate hike, with some uphill areas both in the town and once you got to the walking part of the trail and it was a beautiful day, clear and sunny but not too hot. For most of the hike, you could see the lighthouse in the distance. Once I got up along the ridge above the ocean the breeze became stronger and provided a welcomed bit of cool from the day’s sun.
The trail narrowed and started downhill to the point with the lighthouse offering amazing views of inaccessible coves and beaches. It was a bit twisty turns and at times I had the feeling like you might get in a dream where the path in front of you continues to stretch and gets longer without you making any progress towards the end. I would see the lighthouse and think, ok, I am close, probably just a little bit more, then I would come around another bend and it looked just as far away as before.
I finally made it and the wind was strong at the lighthouse. A petite person might even be in danger of simply blowing away off the side of the ridge, I obviously did not have this problem. I thought maybe I would find a nice place to sit near the lighthouse and read for a bit before going back but the wind proved too much of a distracting factor so after a bit, I turned around and made the journey back to town. On my way, after getting back to the coast and the wind dying down, I found a small beach with a few people sunbathing, reading and swimming and I really wanted to get in the water. I had worn my bathing suit under my hiking clothes in case I came across a beach on my hike so I was ready. I arranged my towel on the rocks – no sand on this beach- and read my book while I warmed up enough to feel ready to plunge in. I walked gingerly to the water’s edge as the rocks really proved difficult even when you entered the water. Everyone looked like they were walking on glass as they came in and out of the water. I took just a quick dip as the water still was very cold and then laid in the sun to dry off and warm up before getting dressed and walking the rest of the way into town.
